Reporting

There are different rules for reporting for coastal and offshore fisheries. The rules for reporting also depend on the size of the fishing vessel.

Coastal Fishery / Inshore Fishery

In Greenland, the coastal fishery takes place from the coast and outwards to 3 nautical miles outside of the baseline.

Within the 3 nautical mile limit, fishing with dinghies and smaller vessels less that 75 GRT / 120 GT is permitted. However, there are certain exceptions to these rules, where, for example, larger vessels fishing for shrimp or scallops may fish within the 3 nautical mile limit.

Smaller vessels with license to fish for cod or snowcrabs in shore, may also fish outside 3 nautical miles outside the baseline. In some areas, dog sledding and snowmobiling can also be used in connection with ice fishing during the winter.

For coastal fisheies, the following rules applies when it comes to reporting of fishing activities::

  • Landing declaration. It is mandatory to report your catches by a landing declaration. Read more about this under Landing Declaration for Fishers.
  • Logbook keeping. If your fishing vessel is 9.4 meters length over all or above, it is mandatory that you keep a logbook on the vessel. Read more about this under Logbook.

Offshore fishery

Offshore fishery takes place from 3 nautical miles outside the baseline and outwards to Greenland’s EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone).

The following rules apply for reporting of catches of fish in the offshore segment:

  • Landing declaration. It is mandatory to report your catches by a landing declaration. Read more about this under Landing Declaration for Fishers.
  • Logbook keeping. If your fishing vessel is 9.4 meters length over all or above, it is mandatory that you keep a logbook on the vessel. Read more about this under Logbook.
  • Hail messages. If a vessel is 75 GRT / 120 GT or more, it must send notifications (hail messages) of the vessel’s activities. Read more about this under Hail Messages.
